You can use this board how : USB<->UART convertor.
Without a processor you can control ch340 outputs, inputs(CTS-DSR-DCD-DTR-RTS,RX,TX)
You can use my Linux application to communicate with UART:

With a processor you can make IR receiver,battery charger(You have to calculate the values of the components according to your own requirements.)
